We had another building power outage yesterday. This is the third one this year, and the fourth one in the past 12 months.
The power went out at 9:30am and didn't return to my building until 4:45pm. During that time I sat on the terrace enjoying the summer and ocean breeze. I read; listened to music and slept. Not much else you could do with no power.
At one point I got bored and walked down to the lobby. I live on the lower 10 floors. I met a friend so we sat and hoped the power would go back on soon. Alas it didn't so we both walked back up to our apartment. I can't wait to hear what caused this power outage.
I'm coming along with the healing. I had decided before the power outage to limit my time of the computer so now I was forced to. I continue to do my hand exercises - doing more than the 10 repetitions required. I'm using my arm more, but I still can't open that apple juice jar nor hold a cast iron skillet.
I bought the squishy ball to help with the hand exercises. The flexibility of my wrist is improving; I can bend it back further than when I first started the hand exercises.
I finished reading Out of Time by Samantha Graves. This is the second book in the series that features sisters, Jillian Talbot who has the sight to see through objects. This is a romantic suspense with a twist of paranormal and I enjoyed it.
August reading round-up: This month I've read 24 books and discovered 5 new-to-me authors: Jessica Conant-Park & Susan Conant, Mike Doogan, Marliss Melton, Gabriella Herkert and Susan Crandall. I've read the following types of books: 11 mystery, 7 romantic suspense, 4 romance and 2 thrillers.

one week later
It’s been a week since I had my surgery and I’m totally amazed at my healing progress. I’ve read many people’s stories on their ulnar nerve transposition surgery and all of them talked about prolonged pain and rehabilitation. My doctor happens to be one of the best in his field and I know everyone is different but I’m so lucky it wasn’t as bad as the others who had the same procedure.
There’s dead skin on my right fingers. I don’t know how to get rid of it. I massaged lotion on them; I scrubbed them with a cloth and still the skin flakes stay and looks disgusting.
I’m using my right hand more and more bearing in mind that I need to keep the elbow bent. I still don’t have full strength – I think I’m at 20%. I still can’t open that elusive bottle of apple juice. The flexibility in taking a shower is better. I find it amazing of the activities one does where your arm needs to be straight.
I no longer am using the protective sleeve so now my elbow (where stitches are) is exposed to the air, I guess for better healing. I still have to wear the sling.

no bandage
I took the subway and bus. I’m moving my arm. It feels good. I’m typing with both my hands. I feel no pain. I still can’t open a bottle of juice. I can read/hold a book using two hands. I’m wearing the sling.
I did my first rotation of exercise and I can't make a proper fist. It just won't close on its own. So I took a bunch of napkins and scrunched it and I was able to do the fist portion of my exercise program. When I flex my wrist back and forth it hurts when I do the back part of it. I'm sure by the 7th day there will be no pain.

doctor visit
Doctor took off bandage and put protective sleeve on elbow/forearm. It is healing nicely. For one week have to make a fist ball and flex wrist repeating it ten times three times a day. I am not to bend my elbow. Then the next two weeks, I have to do karate chop motion and palm up and down, again three times a day with repetition ten times. I can also take a shower but no bending elbow. Go back to doctor in 3 weeks. I still have to wear a sling.

some movement
I continue to heal. Tomorrow is my doctor’s appointment and I’m hoping the next round of bandaging is smaller. I’m noticing that I’m moving my arm a little further from my body. My fingers are getting stronger so that I’m able to holds items and use my left hand to complete the task. I still can’t put on the regular intimate apparel, but I’m able to wear the sports type which is a pull-over. I went out a bought a handled-bath sponge to make showering one-handed easier. Do you know how hard it is to swipe card in atm machine with less domonate hand? Luckily the cashier knew me and she swiped for me.

better
Marianne, I believe the healing process is from 2 months to up to a year. I won’t know more until after my appt. I’m just amazed that I haven’t experienced any pain. I was told that I could go back to work within 7 days after my surgery. I have my first post-operative doctor’s appointment on Wednesday. I need my nails done. I’m noticing for the first time that there is no numbness or tingling in my hand or fingers.
I’m still relaxing everyday although I’m trying to do more and more. What I’ve learned, it is hard to beat an egg and scrambled said egg. It’s hard to read a book with one hand, but I did it. I tried to put on a certain intimate apparel and couldn’t. You really need two hands for that. I was finally able to wash my hair in the sink, still can’t do it in the shower. I’m getting good at typing with my left hand.

still healing
I was on my own yesterday, so I did the laundry. My neighbor helped me put the clothes in the washer. Do you know how difficult it is to take medication with one hand? It’s hard. It’s also hard to prepare a bowl of cereal; pour a glass of water/juice; boil soup; microwave a potato; boil water for tea; take clothes out dryer; wash face; brush teeth. The dried clothes were not folded and my hair was not washed.
My friend came to visit and she bought me home cooked meal of fried chicken and baked macaroni and cheese. After she left, I slept and then watched 2+ hours of the men’s marathon. I was waiting to see the 4x400 relay races.
Today I took my first post-operative shower and that was not an easy task since I had to keep my right bandaged arm dry. I believe I'm healing because I feel itchy.
I'm still typing with my left hand.

day 2 after surgery
My nephew and girlfriend stayed with me. The hospital called to check up on me. They said if I’m not feeling any pain now, then I most likely will not. I was able to do a sponge bath. It’s amazing what you can do with your less dominate hand when you have to.
After 4 years, my building intercom works. The bad news is that the only outlet that works is in my bedroom so if someone rings the bell, I have to use the phone in the bedroom. I plan to buy a cheap cordless so at least I can let people in without going back there. Note I have a cable phone and intercom system is on a different line.
My new desk was delivered assembled and my nephew put everything back in their respective places. I now have to get a printer stand, but that’s not a rush.
Near the end of the afternoon when my nephew went to the store – the toilet overflowed. I used the plunger with left hand, but had to put pressure on the right, so I experienced some pain later on in the evening.
I haven’t read any books lately. I will try to see if I can.
Day 3 tomorrow – I’m solo.

got the call
this afternoon. I have to be at the medical center at 6:30 in the morning tomorrow for my surgery. I will be the first patient the doctor operates on. Hopefully I should be home by noon since the procedure is suppose to take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes.
I don't know when I'll be back online, but thanks for all your kinds words and good wishes. I'll try to have someone send out a note that I'm doing okay.

feeling okay
My preparation continues: the will has been witnessed, notarized and a copy has been mailed to my executrix. The hospital called to tell me to bring my co-payment with me on Thursday and I wrote out two checks that I will need for the end of the month.
Thanks everyone for the good wishes...they are appreciated.
I finished Catnapped by Gabriella Herkert. This cute cozy mystery is the first in the series. The next book is Doggone which I plan to read.

P.A.T.
is pre-admittance testing which is administered before you have ambulatory surgery. After waiting 30 minutes, I was called in. They took my temperature (98 degree); blood pressure (141/83); weight (lost 1 pound), height (I'm 5.4.5 inches tall) then was asked the obligatory questions of allergies to medication (yes, sulfur-based), prior surgeries (yes and I gave her a list of all surgeries as well as my medical history). Then I was passed on to the next person who took some blood (hooray she found a vein quickly) and then an EKG. Then lastly I took chest x-rays. Then it was over but I got caught up in the maze of the office and couldn't find me way out. I knocked on a couple of doors and was finally led the way out.
I won't find out what time I have to be at the hospital under Wednesday afternoon. I do hope I get a morning slot.
Yesterday I was fighting a wicked headache without using over-the-counter drugs. I was able to survive by eating comfort food. Today I had a small lingering headache which I hope goes away.
I finished Hex Breaker by Devon Ellington. I'm not a fan of paranormal but I liked her story. Prior to that, I finished Don't Let Go by Marliss Melton which I thought was a romantic suspense novel. It was a romance with twist and very enjoyable.
Did anyone see In Plain Sight last night? What a great episode and season finale.

almost there
The apartment is cleaned from top to bottom. The food had been purchase. I got simple foods that can be prepared easily, crackers, frozen veggies, pasta, peanut butter, jelly 100 calorie cookies, eggs and juices. I will get fresh fruits and veggies the day before. I also prepared five small meals and put in freezer.
Oh you will never believe what United Airlines did again. They changed both my mother and my seats moving me 3 rows and my mother one row in front of our reserved seat. I immediately called United and was told because the plane change - I told them no it didn't. It's the same plane as on my copy. I then wrote a letter instructing them that they better not change my seat and especially move me away from my mother. The nerve of them.
I watched Nadal beat Chile; watched the Williams sister beat Spain; saw cycling; saw women's basketball; watch beach volleyball and track and field.
I don't know about you but every time our national anthem is played, I'm singing it with such bravado it brings a tear and smile to my face to share it with the athletes.

no title
Took care of several household chores that I won't be able to get to while recovering. Went to the library then took a stroll.
I finished my will and it looks good. Now I have to get at least 3 witnesses so that it can be notarized.
I'm getting a new computer desk delivered on Friday. The desk that I had in my place couldn't fit through the door so I had to take it apart and then bring it down to the garbage area. It wasn't that hard since I only made two stops downstairs.
I love seeing the sights and sounds of Beijing.

rain day 2
Another evening of thundering and lightening.
I went to the farmer's market this afternoon and we were able to sample peaches, tomatoes, plum, blackberries. I sampled white peaches and oh my goodness, it was good, so I bought 3 small ones.
I finished Kitchen Matches by Marianne Arkins and I loved this cute romance story.

rain day
It's raining; it's pouring, the old man is snoring. You should hear the loud thunder strikes and see the flash of lightening and the torrential downpour of rain. Thank goodness I made it home right before that first loud clash.
I finished Open Season by Linda Howard and I loved this romantic suspense story that was recommended to me by Brandy.
Another thing I haven't thought of is food. I have to find easy-friendly food that doesn't require much work on my part. I may make several dishes and freeze them.
My mom is staying with me on the day of surgery and the next day. After that I'll be on my own. According to the doctor, I could go back to work within 2-5 days after the procedure.
Today I failed miserably at just using my left hand.

a week before
Today I was doing a search on my procedure when I found this site where the person details the week before and subsequent days after the surgery. What he wrote was interesting and there were things I never thought of. One of the things he talked about and I had already started doing was to create a will. It sounds morbid, but it should be done and especially since I have a hard time waking up from anesthesia.
What I didn't or haven't thought about is the fact that I will only have the use of one hand for at least two weeks. Think of all the things you do with two hands, let alone, your dominate hand. They include getting dressed, preparing meals, combing hair, brushing and flossing teeth, bathing, turning on the TV, reading a book, among other things. We're not even talking about being on a computer. I will face the same things he faced since both our jobs required the use of a computer.
So now my goal is to prepare myself and do as much of my everyday chores with my left hand. Do you think this will work? I just made hot chocolate using my left hand. It added several steps to the process, but it was doable. I will do a thorough house cleaning and because I won't be able to write, I will get all my bills done and checks written.

home
just walked in from my business dinner meeting. Put on the Olympics to see the USA women's gymnast score 16.90, I think her name is Liukin. I think I missed Phelps get his latest gold medal. I hope I see his race on the repeats.
Dinner was at a nice little Italian restaurant where the food was delicious. Pasta was not offered as part of our meal but when I said "what you don't have pasta in an Italian restaurant?" and the wait said you want pasta, I will get your table pasta. And we got pasta in addition to our meal.
Yes! Phelps wins another gold in the men's 4 x 200 swimming relay and with a new world record.
I'm posting this now and I hope the US wins the silver in women's gymnastics.

monday
In the office today, we were working when all of a sudden we heard this very loud boom. With our city's history we became concerned. Then it got dark outside and we breathed a sigh of relief because then we saw lightening and heard another boom, but not as loud and then this torrential downpour of rain.
I had to cancel an order because delivery was supposed to be last week and when I called this morning, they had no idea what the status was.
I finished Mission Canyon by Meg Gardiner, the second in a series of 5 books featuring Evan Delaney and I enjoyed it.
Brandy, I'm not a boxing fan but it was the only thing on and I found it boring.
Keri, I was glued to the TV when the men's 4x100 relay swimming was on. I was praying and to see that come from behind win by the Americans was priceless.
Tori, I saw the commercial for the new show with Christian Slater. I will definitely give that show a try.
Melissa, I try to watch the Olympics when none of my shows are on or if they are, I'm flipping between the channels.

not much
Not much going on today. Watched women's synchronize diving - USA didn't medal; watched gymnastics - waiting for USA team and watched boring boxing.
I like some of the commercials that are being shown during the Olympics broadcast. That NBC show for fall season, Kath & Kim, looks stupid.
Sad news: besides Bernie Mac passing at 50 yesterday, Issac Hayes passed at 65.

continued
It's a good thing I did the meme in the post below because I really don't have much to say tonight.
Work is changing. I can't talk much about it and I don't know my role, but I won't worry about it until after my procedure.
I just finished reading The Dirty Secrets Club by Meg Gardiner and if you like thrillers, head to the library or your bookstore and pick up this book.
I'm down to my last library book and tomorrow I'll pick up Turn up the Heat by Jessica Conant-Park & Susan Conant, Capitol Offense by Mike Doogan and Open Season by Linda Howard. I have a couple of books that I bought, but I want to save them for when I can't get to the library because of the cast or whatever will be wrapped around the stitches.

24 hours
Not much to talk about these past two days.
I had to get a new shredder. What happened to the lightweight shredders of the past? The one I got, on sale BTW, was heavy. It was delivered to the office and of course it was sent in an over sized box. One I removed it from the carton and took the shredder out of the box with the styrofoam fillings, it was still heavy. I put it on two plastic bags and the handles ripped. I found one of those woven cotton bags with long handles and I prayed that I would get it home without incident. Between carrying it by the handles and cradling it, I made it home safe and sound. This thing shreds, paper, unopened junk mail, credit cards, small paper clips, staples and CD/DVDs.
I love my new laptop table. I did have to adjust my chair because using the cooling fans raises the laptop where my wrist wasn't leveled with the laptop. Now, everything is allright.
I finished Blue Smoke and Murder by Elizabeth Lowell and I enjoyed it. The romantic suspense book features characters from the previous book, and involves murder and the art world.
Brandy, the doctor knows I don't take much for my migraines.

I had to get a new shredder. What happened to the lightweight shredders of the past? The one I got, on sale BTW, was heavy. It was delivered to the office and of course it was sent in an over sized box. One I removed it from the carton and took the shredder out of the box with the styrofoam fillings, it was still heavy. stuff
I hate migraine headaches. I tried not to take anything for it because one week before my surgery, I can not take any aspirins, so I wanted to see how I would do. I failed. I had to take something.
I finished Simmer Down by Susan Conant & Jessica Conant-Park which features Chloe Carter and her chef boyfriend and When Day Breaks by Mary Jane Clark which features Eliza Blake and her friends who band together to solve mysteries. I enjoyed both mysteries and look forward to the second book in their series.

Apple
I love apples. I like golden delicious or gala, but that's not what this is about.
This is about not having an appointment to have the genius bar people look at my sad state of an iPod. I got to the Fifth Avenue Apple store at 7:50am and because I didn't have one, I had to wait on standby. So I waited and waited until I got antsy and inquired as to when my name would be called. At 8:35am I called the office to tell them I would be late and finally at 8:40am I was called. It took the guy all of 5 minutes to tell me that it was gone. Never to come back and grace me with its music. I heard the rumors, but yes it was confirmed that their average life span is 2-3 years and mine has surpassed her usage.
Solution: 10% recycle fee towards a new one or go to an outside vendor and have them mess around with it. If my warranty hadn't expired, they would have replaced it. Hmm, who's to say the thing would work once the outside vendor starts poking into her innards. I chose getting a new one and bought the warranty because it will be worth the cost in 2 years. I did play with all the Mac computers and now I'm in love.

a slow day
For those who use a laptop, how do you use it? Do you put it on your lap? on your desk? on your bed? on the floor? sitting in a chair? on the kitchen table? on a tray table?
So far the tray table works best for me. It's the perfect height and the keyboard aligns well with my hand. The only problem is that the tray table is too small that there's not enough room to maneuver the mouse and also to place my external hard drive.
So I've been searching for something similar, that has the same height, and I found one at Staples. So off I went to the two stores and yes, you guessed it, they didn't have it in stock, or rather in the store. Delivery of table will arrive on Tuesday.
While out and about, I bought a Brita water filtration system, okay, the classic pitcher. It was on sale and I got a free bottle to use. All to help save the environment.
I downloaded Firefox. I don't like the placement of certain items that I'm used to on IE.
I watched Undercover Blues. I love this movie. Last week I saw Serial Mom.

adventures
what a fun day it was.
First DR and I met up with two ex-coworkers for lunch at one of the local Chinese restaurants. We gabbed, ate and drank until we realized that it was 2:15p and DR and I had to get back to the office before we were missed.
Then another coworker has never been to a book launch party and came along with me to Devon's for the new release of her novella Hex Breaker. The party was held at Sosa Borella which is located around the corner from my old job. It was great to finally meet Devon and put a face with a name. Sangria was served as was meat empanadas, pizza margarita and bread with olive oil. Devon also gave out a flyer that she made and we signed her guest book. We stayed and celebrated with Devon and her friends. I got a CD of the Hex Breaker book and Devon autographed it.
Brandy, today was not a good one for the forearm. I was fine in the morning, but all afternoon, I had this streaking pain that wouldn't stop. It felt better when I was rubbing it. The elbow splint does help when I sleep. Yes, my surgery is in 20 days.
