I did my usual morning chores before going to work when I noticed that my shirt needed to be ironed. So I ironed my shirt and went about my morning business which included an email check, a blog check, a cellphone check,a Facebook check and a morning news/weather check. It was getting late so I shut down everything and left for work. I get back home and OMG! noticed that I forgot to do one thing..unplug the iron. It's a good thing I have one of those automatic shut-off on my iron or who know what I would have came home to.

Today I was surprised with a gift of sweets. Due to the outcome of the situation that ended last week, my friend sent me a sampler of chocolate malt balls, chocolate pecan turtles, chocolate wafers and lightly salted roasted shelled pistachios. Yum!

Today I played with a Sony reader; it was okay. I can't wait to play with the nook and then I can make a decision.

I found a home for the last quilt that I created. My friend just welcomed a granddaughter, the first girl in her immediate family.

Quilting update: The design work, now begins hand-piecing the squares. Here is the first four-patch quilt block.

Word of the day: FATUOUS - stupid; foolishly self-satisfied

Trivia: On this day in 1889, the first jukebox made its debut in San Francisco, at the Palais Royale Saloon.

on TV tonight: Castle, Two and a Half Men, DWTS

I'm still reading Three Days Dead by Keith Donnelly.
--

a quiet Sunday

I didn't do much today except the laundry (started late because security opened up the room 45 minutes late); went food shopping and then went to my power-walking class. I had the salad and penne and my friends had either the fish or the chicken and they both said their meal was good as was mine. The only thing that marred this experience was the service which was very poor. Sometimes the service can ruin a good meal and in this case, it did.

The musical featuring John Stamos, Gina Gershon and Bill Irwin was fun. After watching a couple of acts, I then remembered the concept of the play and enjoyed the rest of the performance. John was great as was the rest of the cast. Bill Irwin, as always, added comic antics to the performance.

From yesterday:
Word of the day: ABYSS - an extremely deep hole

From yesterday:
Trivia: On this day in 1832, the first streetcar went into operation in New York City, NY. Oh tomorrow I'm going to see the Broadway musical Bye, Bye Birdie featuring John Stamos. We've sampled all the foods that looked of interest to us. I never knew how many varieties of barbecue sauce are out in the marketplace. I never saw so many ways of preparing meat to use for said barbecue sauce. Lots of people. Crowds everywhere. Lines to sample food. Vendors selling their wares. First they did a little remodeling so I was a bit confused as to where the books were shelved. Of the six books that I wanted, they only had two in stock, Kindred in Death by J.D. Robb and Murder Had a Little Lamb by Cynthia Baxter. On an impulse buy, I picked up Dirty Sexy Knitting by Christie Ridgway.

Later I ordered Bookplate Special by Lorna Barrett, Take Me For A Ride by Karen Kendall, Dial Om for Murder by Diana Killian and The Fashion Hound Murders by Elaine Viets online.

The reason for the remodeling - they built an area to sell their newest gadget - "the nook". They had a mock version, without the insides and functional buttons, for us to touch and get a feel. The store said they'll have some in stock the week of Thanksgiving.

This afternoon during lunch, we went on an excursion to the West Side. I wanted to see what everyone was talking about. Docked in the Hudson River stands the Navy's newest - the assault ship, USS New York, made with 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel that is part of its bow. It is not prudent at this time to make any big-item purchases right now; of course I don't consider thinking about pre-ordering "the nook" a big-item purchase.

I bought the pre-packaged Caesar Salad mix which includes the salad dressing, cheese and croutons. I didn't plan on using the dressing, cheese and croutons but I just like how they break up the leaves in the package. So what do you think my surprise was? The salad dressing, cheese and croutons were not in its cellophane packaging. Like I said, it didn't matter because I used my low-fat Catalina dressing.

Word of the Day: truculent - Fierce; savage; ferocious; barbarous

Trivia: On this day in 1783, Gen. Unfortunately the book that I wanted, Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo, was very popular and finally the book was ready for me, but was taken away because my hold date had expired. Luckily I know the librarian and she was able to put me at the top of the list to get the book again. I did come home with Huckleberry Finished by Livia J. Washburn, Blood Game by Iris Johansen and Abandoned by Cody Mcfadyen.

Word of the day: PLEBEIAN - of a low social class

On this day in 1892, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle is published.

October reading round-up: This month I've read 20 books and discovered 3 new-to-me authors: Lisa Bork, Lucy Lawrence and Heather Webber. I've read the following types of books: 10 cozy mysteries, 4 romantic suspense, 3 thrillers, 2 mystery/suspense and 1 romance.

I'm reading Sink Trap by Christy Evans, the first book in the new "Georgiana Neverall" cozy mystery series.
--

I got an award

Marianne awarded me the Honest Scrap award. Thanks!

The rules are as follows: Thank the blogger who awarded you, and then list 10 honest things about yourself. Choose 7 other blogs to receive the award, and inform the bloggers that you've chosen them.

1. My fear of being surrounded by water (above my head or wading) is intense, but I’m glad I over some of my fear enough to enjoy cruising.

2. If it wasn’t for having to work and the Internet, I would be a hermit/recluse. Wanting my own money and my own place, I had to leave the comfort of my mother’s home and seek employment. The Internet allowed me to meet new people virtually which lead to meeting the same people in real life who have become good friends and those virtual friends have become a part of my daily life.

3. The universe is testing me since I try to live my life stress-free, but unfortunately, it’s not happening at this time. Twitching eyes, headaches and most recently blurry visions is causing me some discomfort. I know that once the situation has cleared, good or bad, I know I can handle it.

4. I’m an introvert and it is hard for me to socialize among a group of unfamiliar faces. I’ll be the one hugging the wall. Even if I’m invited to an event with one familiar faces, I’ll find a spot and stay until it’s time to leave. However, I tend to have a good time people watching and listening to conversations.

5. I may debate whether to attend an event (I don’t like going alone), but if I really want to see that author or celebrity, I’ll go and sit in the back of the room so that I go unnoticed. Of course the last two times I went to an author’s event, I got a shout-out.

6. When playing games, either with a group or online, I’m not at all competitive. I’m happy if I win, but I don’t strive to win.

7. I will not let people take advantage of me. People tend to think just because I’m quiet that I won’t speak up for myself. They only have to betray me to see my wrath. Too many people in my life, especially family and friends have burned me and it hurts.

8. I’ve been known to get rid of toxic friends in order to save my sanity.

9. I chose to remain single and childless. Having grown up a single-parent household and also see cousins raised the same way, I saw their daily struggle to put food on the table and clothes on our back all by themselves and I knew if there was no husband present, I would not be a single parent.

10. I can’t wear anything around my neck because I feel like I’m being suffocated.

I don't have too many people to tag:

Tori
Brandy
Melissa
--

slow

I don't know what is going on, but I'm feeling a bit tired and sluggish.

I lost another set of earrings. If a book author has a book signing in NYC, I'll be there.

Today I went to a book signing at my local quilt shop. Clare O’Donohue, author of two books in the "Someday Quilt" mysteries series was there to tell us how she got started and the roads she traveled to bring her story to the printed page. It was a great event and I'm glad I discovered her work. Oh the best thing was before she started the session, she asked if I was there. I love it when authors remember me from emails or correspondence. I had told her I would be attending this event. I got both my books autographed and it is sitting on my autographed book row.

Word of the Day: ACIDULOUS - sour in taste or manner

New York Trivia: On this day in 1858, Roland Macy opened Macy's Department Store in New York City. It was Macy's eighth business venture -- the other seven failed. And on this day in 1904, the New York subway system officially opened. It was the first rapid-transit subway system in America.

Steps taken today: 5,642 (rain)

on TV tonight: nothing

I'm reading Heir of the Dog by Judi McCoy, the second book in the "Dog Walker" mystery series.
--

a quiet Monday

The big news around here is....The Yankees are playing in the World Series.

Word of the day: ONEROUS - troublesome and oppressive; burdensome

Trivia: On this day in 1774, The First Continental Congress of the U.S. adjourned in Philadelphia. At that time I had no idea what I was going to do, but I just let the fabric and the creative juice create. All of the patterned fabric was used. Introducing Assorted Flavors. I'm always amazed at the finished product and the picture does not do it justice.

This project was interesting because it's the largest quilt that I've ever made. Hand piecing it was easy. I actually like this part because this is where you design and create how the quilt will look. The hard part was machine quilting because there was more to work with. I had to roll the ends so that it was easy to quilt. I did learn from the class I took and put the ironing board behind my sewing table to catch the quilt as I stitched. You really feel the weight. I know eventually I should make the attempt to make a crib-size quilt.

I had a good workout at my indoor power walking class. The one thing I could not do is locate the spot to self-take my pulse. The instructor was able to locate it and I felt the beat. Another classmate was able to locate my pulse and I felt the beat. But when I tried the same spot without their guidance, I couldn't located it until they literately put my fingers on the spot. Oh well.

I have two clocks in my bedroom; one by my bed which is 30 minutes faster and one on my dresser which shows the correct time. Obviously the clock on the dresser thought it was Daylight Savings Time because the digits said 4:08 instead of 5:08. So this tells me that next week may be Daylight Savings Time.

Word of the day: DILATE - to make larger; to expand

Trivia: On this day in 1400, author, Geoffrey Chaucer, died at the age of 57. He was the first poet to be buried in Westminster Abbey. And on this day in 1962, American author, John Steinbeck, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

on TV tonight: Cold Case

I'm reading Storm Cycle by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen
--

rainy night here

Finally the FedEx man arrived with my delivery of my netbook.
