lost but not found

I can't find my laundry card. [edited: we need the card to use the washer and dryer]  I tore my place upside down looking for that card. I have to wait till Monday to get a new card from management. It's a good thing that I have a couple-of-days-worth of clean clothes.

So the library took one of my books from my hold. When we request library books, we have to include a date as to how long we want to wait for the books. Normally I add an extra month beyond the publishing date for my hold. Unfortunately the book that I wanted, Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo, was very popular and finally the book was ready for me, but was taken away because my hold date had expired. Luckily I know the librarian and she was able to put me at the top of the list to get the book again. I did come home with Huckleberry Finished by Livia J. Washburn, Blood Game by Iris Johansen and Abandoned by Cody Mcfadyen.

I got an award

Marianne awarded me the Honest Scrap award.  Thanks!

The rules are as follows: Thank the blogger who awarded you, and then list 10 honest things about yourself. Choose 7 other blogs to receive the award, and inform the bloggers that you've chosen them.

1.  My fear of being surrounded by water (above my head or wading) is intense, but I’m glad I over some of my fear enough to enjoy cruising.

2. If it wasn’t for having to work and the Internet, I would be a hermit/recluse. Wanting my own money and my own place, I had to leave the comfort of my mother’s home and seek employment. The Internet allowed me to meet new people virtually which lead to meeting the same people in real life who have become good friends and those virtual friends have become a part of my daily life.

3. The universe is testing me since I try to live my life stress-free, but unfortunately, it’s not happening at this time. Twitching eyes, headaches and most recently blurry visions is causing me some discomfort. I know that once the situation has cleared, good or bad, I know I can handle it.

4.  I’m an introvert and it is hard for me to socialize among a group of unfamiliar faces. I’ll be the one hugging the wall. Even if I’m invited to an event with one familiar faces, I’ll find a spot and stay until it’s time to leave. However, I tend to have a good time people watching and listening to conversations.

5.  I may debate whether to attend an event (I don’t like going alone), but if I really want to see that author or celebrity, I’ll go and sit in the back of the room so that I go unnoticed. Of course the last two times I went to an author’s event, I got a shout-out.

6.  When playing games, either with a group or online, I’m not at all competitive. I’m happy if I win, but I don’t strive to win.

7.  I will not let people take advantage of me. People tend to think just because I’m quiet that I won’t speak up for myself. They only have to betray me to see my wrath. Too many people in my life, especially family and friends have burned me and it hurts.

8.  I’ve been known to get rid of toxic friends in order to save my sanity.

9.  I chose to remain single and childless. Having grown up a single-parent household and also see cousins raised the same way, I saw their daily struggle to put food on the table and clothes on our back all by themselves and I knew if there was no husband present, I would not be a single parent.

10.  I can’t wear anything around my neck because I feel like I’m being suffocated.

I don't have too many people to tag:

I don't know what is going on, but I'm feeling a bit tired and sluggish.

    book signings

I love book signings, especially with authors that I like. If a book author has a book signing in NYC, I'll be there.

Today I went to a book signing at my local quilt shop. Clare O’Donohue, author of two books in the "Someday Quilt" mysteries series was there to tell us how she got started and the roads she traveled to bring her story to the printed page. It was a great event and I'm glad I discovered her work. Oh the best thing was before she started the session, she asked if I was there. I love it when authors remember me from emails or correspondence. I had told her I would be attending this event. I got both my books autographed and it is sitting on my autographed book row.

    it is done

    the beginning
    the end
Above you'll find the picture of when I knew what fabric and/or color scheme was planned on using for the quilt. At that time I had no idea what I was going to do, but I just let the fabric and the creative juice create. All of the patterned fabric was used. Introducing Assorted Flavors. I'm always amazed at the finished product and the picture does not do it justice.

This project was interesting because it's the largest quilt that I've ever made. Hand piecing it was easy. I actually like this part because this is where you design and create how the quilt will look. The hard part was machine quilting because there was more to work with. I had to roll the ends so that it was easy to quilt. I did learn from the class I took and put the ironing board behind my sewing table to catch the quilt as I stitched. You really feel the weight. I know eventually I should make the attempt to make a crib-size quilt.

I had a good workout at my indoor power walking class. The one thing I could not do is locate the spot to self-take my pulse. The instructor was able to locate it and I felt the beat. Another classmate was able to locate my pulse and I felt the beat. But when I tried the same spot without their guidance, I couldn't located it until they literately put my fingers on the spot. Oh well.

I have two clocks in my bedroom; one by my bed which is 30 minutes faster and one on my dresser which shows the correct time. Obviously the clock on the dresser thought it was Daylight Savings Time because the digits said 4:08 instead of 5:08. So this tells me that next week may be Daylight Savings Time.

Word of the day: DILATE - to make larger; to expand

Trivia: On this day in 1400, author, Geoffrey Chaucer, died at the age of 57. He was the first poet to be buried in Westminster Abbey. And on this day in 1962, American author, John Steinbeck, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

    rainy night here

Finally the FedEx man arrived with my delivery of my netbook. It will be used for mobility since the laptop I have now is a desktop replacement model.

While I waited I watched Monsters vs. Aliens-cute and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen-action-packed and long.

I went to the library and picked up Storm Cycle by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen.

I just found out that I can program my DVR from my cable company's website. It even list all the shows that I recorded and my scheduled recordings. How cool is that?

    just wrong

The time has escaped me. Firefox wasn't working. Facebook wasn't working. And tea-making definitely wasn't working.

I felt like a cup of team so when I saw that I had sugar and tea, I was happy.  I know, but it's a rarity for me to have these items in my place. So anyway, I boiled the water and put sugar and tea bag in cup. Tea kettle whistles and I pour water in the cup and notice that after I stir, the tea water is a bit cloudy and it just doesn't look right so I throw it away and make another cup of tea and the same thing happens. I didn't think anything of it, so I poured milk in the tea and then prepare to drink my cup of tea. Only. What. I. Discover. Is. That. I. Made. The. Tea. With. SALT. I immediately spit and pour the tea out. The question I had was "why was the salt in my sugar container?"

Did you hear that The Weather Channel will now air movies for the first time? The first movie being shown on Friday nights will be "The Perfect Storm."

I got my annual co-op insurance and OMG the premium was doubled. I remembered

Today I wrote down everything that I did today and it was my usual Sunday activities of laundry and grocery shopping. My power walking class was canceled due to college activities, so they tacked the missed day to the end of our scheduled class.

Did you know that blogger updated their post editing setting? If you click the "settings" tab; "basic"; scroll down to "global settings"; my default was "old editor" and I changed it to the "updated editor". I like it.  Hmm, I don't see the spell check tab.  Ooh, it automatically does the spell check.  Cool.

Also with blogger today when I click on the comment box, it opens up to the full screen. Is it doing that to you as well?

quilting update: Trimmed the excess fabric backing surrounding the quilt to one inch and folded in half and pressed in place. Next I decided on what color thread to use (red or natural) for hand-stitching and now all I have to do is put the red thread in the little eye that you can barely see on the needle and start the binding process.

I know I was out and about but I don't know what the heck I did. I know I finished up the machine-quilting, but that was in the late afternoon.

quilting update: finished machine-quilting the quilt sandwich. Next and last step is to bind the quilt. I placed the unfinished quilt on my lap and it made a great throw.

    rambling

The whole balloon thing was intense and I really hope that this was not a publicity stunt and if so, the family should pay for the use of the emergency personnel.

I had to uninstall Microsoft Office (it was an upgrade) and install Microsoft Office (it was full version) because a file got corrupted and I was having a problem with Excel and Outlook.

    watching intently

Have you been watching the events happening in Denver? A six-year old boy was floating in a homemade flying saucer-shaped balloon. We were all glued to a co-worker's computer watching the events live praying that the balloon will land safely and the little boy will come out unharmed. To our horror when the balloon landed, the boy was not inside. Our worst fears is that he fell out of the balloon. Breaking news: the boy was found safe and alive.

    Christmas Catalogs

I got the J.C. Penny Christmas catalog the other day. I was truly surprised at how thin it was and how it look like a regular J.C. Penny catalog. Do you remember the big gigantic Sears Christmas Wish catalog; Spiegel oversized Christmas catalog; the big gigantic J.C. Penney catalog? Times sure has changed. I remember it took us several weeks to go through every page and mark all the things that we wanted for Christmas. We had to take turns but I believe we perused the catalog from October until December added items that we wanted. Because we were a single-parent low paying household, we knew we couldn't get 99% of the things we marked, but it was a wish and a dream. Today's J.C. Penny catalog - I perused it in under 3 hours without markings.

Brandy - The class went very well my day was okay.

Tori - Yes, the class was fun especially since I knew one of the girls and met another one who is a stand-up comedienne.

Marianne asked about my knees and you know it felt better after the class. I could probably do some of what I learn in between classes, but I like the motivation of the instructor.

Diane - I subscribe to CBS Eye-Lerts which lets me know what time the shows will air after the football game or a delay in programming.

Melissa - it's good to see you blog hopping and thanks.

Anne-Kathrine - I have a touch of arthritis in my knees.

Keri - you gotta love those Yankees. The true test will be when the face the Angels.

    power walking class

Today was the first day of my indoor power walking class. It was great to see the instructor and one other participant who I took another class with. The first half hour was spent going over what to expect out of the class and a greet and meet session with the other class members. We start the class with warm-ups, then stretches before we start the power walking. Light aerobics to increase our heart rate and then we conclude with a cool-down and final stretches before the class ends. All in all today was good and right now my goal is endurance and then towards the end it will be to increase the speed of the walking segment.

Quilting update: Still machine-quilting the quilt sandwich. I have the other half left to quilt-stitch. I did name the quilt and stitched the label on the back.

Word of the day: Compunction - feeling of uneasiness caused by guilt or regret

    nice day to quilt

I don't know how quilters machine-quilt a large quilt. It's bad enough my straight lines are not straight, but when you have to handle a large quilt with folds here and folds there, the straight lines one is attempting to do becomes non-existent. However, regardless of how non-straight the lines look, it looks good. Tomorrow I'll try to finish the rest of the machine-quilting.

Tomorrow is the first day of my indoor power-walking class and why oh why is my knee bothering me.

    Quilting update: machine-quilted the sashing.

    book signing

You all know that I like quilting as it relaxes me. I also enjoy mysteries because I like solving the puzzle. Combine the two and you have quilting with a mystery to solve. Right now I read two authors who write quilting mysteries, Terri Thayer and Clare O’Donohue. I recently bought Clare's latest book, A Drunkard's Path and it is waiting on my shelf to be read. I loved the first one and that book became a keeper. Anyway, last night the e-newsletter from my quilt shop came and guess who's doing a book signing event there? Yep, Clare. I already called my quilt shop and put my name on the list to attend this event.

I don't like this new heating pad that I got. It doesn't heat as high like the old one.

    missed one

I woke up this morning and realized that I didn't post last night. Oh well, I didn't have much to say anyway.

I went to an offsite today. I don't know what the hotel that was holding summit was thinking, but it was too darn cold sitting at the table. First I wrapped the scarf around my neck, then I had my coat on my shoulders and finally, I had to put the coat on. I know they like to make it cold to keep people alert, but it has the opposite effect on me, I tend to go to sleep when it's too cold.

As I was walking to the hotel, I saw the big Barnes & Noble on 17th Street which I was led to believe had close. Unless the person meant the one that was on 23rd Street, which was not a big B&N store to me.

Quilting update: I wish I had the machine that could do the fancy smancy quilting stitches. All I know to do is straight, well in my case, not-so straight lines up and down the quilt.

Word of the day: Chaos - great disorder or confusion

Trivia: On this day in 1871, the Great Fire of Chicago broke out. At least 300 people were killed and 90,000 were left homeless.

    fire safety

Had fun today. Today was Fire Safety Day and watched a demonstration with the firemen using the jaws of life. It was cool seeing them tear off the door and then ripping off the roof and then finally evacuating the injured person. It was so cool. Then they had old fire trucks and when we left we got a goodie bag filled with fire safety pencil, comic book, flashlight, rubber bracelet and ruler.

Quilting update: Wow, this quilt is big. I had to use the kitchen table to lay out the top quilt, the lite-loft batting and the quilt backing that I needed to assemble the quilt sandwich. I basted the sandwich and will let it settle before beginning the next step is machine quilting.

    short trip

I took a short trip to Charlotte, North Carolina to visit my freshman niece. She wanted to show me her dorm, her campus and the mall nearby. I had a suspicion that in the mall I would be talked into giving up several of my dollars. My suspicion was met.
